Representation and Identity in Contemporary Women Artists’ Video

This essay is an initial study that examines selected contemporary video artworks addressing identity and representation by Italian women artists. The author shows how these artists seek to avoid the objectification sanitisation of traditional iconographies involving in patriarchal Catholic systems. Selected works Elisabetta Di Sopra, Francesca Fini, Mariateresa Sartori are discussed comparing elements from earlier generations feminist artists, such as Pipilotti Rist, Elaine Shemilt, Catherine Elwes. Drawing on theories both art, this article development a new aesthetic early women’s art practice 1970s 1980s still relevant task critically examining assessing aesthetics today, remains key tool used experiment with remediation identity.
